In the early twentieth century, French troops were sent to occupy Algeria and photographers accompanied them. Pictures were taken of women in harems smoking hookah, laying on couches-sometimes nude-and even bars on the windows. This was all part of a project titled “The Colonial Harem”. However, the pictures were found out to be modeled, after the photographers could not find women in the way they thought they would find them. It turns out that women are used quite often as a way to justify invasion and war.
