The difference between a Swedish Massage and a Deep Tissue massage is perhaps best explained by the goal of each massage. The purpose of a Swedish Massage is to improve circulation, ease muscle tension and to bring about total relaxation. Deep Tissue Massage, on the other hand, reaches a little further into the body, into the fascia or connective tissue of the body. When a therapist gives a Deep Tissue Massage his intent is to work with the fascia and it is often used on chronic adhesions, muscle problems and misalignments. Deep Tissue Massage is also used on sports injuries, chronic pain, muscular knots and spasms, and many other abnormal muscle problems.
